Earn an Internationally Recognized German Language Certificate

The Goethe-Zertifikat is one of the world's most respected German language certifications. Developed by the Goethe-Institut, these exams are recognized by employers, universities, and institutions around the globe as reliable proof of German language proficiency.

The German Society of Pennsylvania is proud to provide a convenient testing location for students, professionals, educators, and lifelong learners throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the surrounding region.

Goethe-Zertifikat B2

The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 demonstrates upper-intermediate German language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The exam consists of four independently bookable modules:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking (oral exam with two participants)

Candidates who pass the B2 examination demonstrate that they can:

  • Understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics.
  • Participate in conversations with native German speakers fluently and spontaneously.
  • Express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics while discussing different viewpoints and supporting their opinions.

The B2 certificate is accepted by some universities and colleges in Germany and is also valuable for professional and personal development.

Goethe-Zertifikat C1

The Goethe-Zertifikat C1 certifies advanced German language proficiency and is designed for learners who use German confidently in academic, professional, and everyday settings.

Like the B2 exam, the C1 examination includes four modules that may be taken together or separately:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking (oral exam with two participants)

Successful candidates demonstrate the ability to:

  • Use German effectively and flexibly in academic, professional, public, and private contexts.
  • Understand demanding texts, including implicit meaning, even on unfamiliar subjects.
  • Speak fluently, present complex ideas clearly, and defend their opinions in discussion.

Many German universities recognize the C1 certificate as proof of language proficiency for admission, although applicants should always confirm the specific requirements of their chosen institution.

Take Your Goethe Exam in Philadelphia

As the oldest German cultural institution in the United States, the German Society of Pennsylvania is committed to promoting German language and culture.
